Dear Rose,
I am writing this letter in response to yours, and my worst fears have been confirmed. Your father hasn't seen your letter, and I'll be honest with you, I hope he never will. You see, not all Slytherins are bad, Rosie. Your father knows that, but.. well.. he'll always be the proud Gryffindor, lets say. But let me ask you, are these people he's spending time with dangerous? Mean? If they are, then try to speak with him. If they're not.. just let him make new friends. I await your response.

Sincerely,
Mum

My worst fears have been confirmed. What does that even mean? The owl sits at my window, snapping impatiently. Already in frustration, I throw some food at the bird. It flies away. For some reason, I don't want to write back to my mother. If I look back, writing to my parents wasn't the best thing I could do. Now, Mum was going to tell Ginny, and she'll tell Harry, and he'll tell George, and he'll tell Angelina, and somehow it'll all come back to my father.
And then he'll tell Hugo. Oh, what have I done? But I don't have much time to relish in my failure, because I have to get dressed and ready for class. I'm barely aware of me grabbing my books, and putting on my shoes. I walk to the Great Hall for breakfast, not even bothering to wait for Aimee and Lizzie, when I realize I'm running late.

''Where have you been?'' Aimee asks. ''I've never heard of you sleeping in..''

''I wasn't sleeping in,'' I say quickly. ''I was..''

''Reading a letter.'' Lizzie says, and I'm shocked.

''Were you spying on me?''

''Rose, your bed is right next to mine. I saw you reading it when I woke up, chill.''

I relax. ''Oh.'' But Aimee has always been known to be nosy.

''What's the letter about?''

''Nothing!'' I say quickly, and probably too quickly because Aimee flinches. ''Sorryy..'' She mumbles.

I don't even see Hugo in the Great Hall, again. Maybe he's avoiding me, or is he with his friends? But then I see them sitting at the Slytherin table, all the way at the end of the Hall. Hugo isn't with them. Something is definitely up.
Ignoring Aimee and Lizzie's pleas and questions of ''Wait? Where are you going?! Rosie!'' I left the Great Hall and went to the library. Actually, I sprinted. My body hadn't been used to moving this fast since Summer, when all of my cousins and I would run over all the hills at The Burrow.
Lily always won.
I finally get to the library, and carefully search between every row of books. I see some familiar faces, and some unfamiliar faces.. but no Hugo. I'm beginning to give up, when I finally hear his voice.

''Yeah, I did it. Wasn't too hard.''

''Good. Now, all we need is two other things. Then we're set.''

Set for what?

''I'll get the bracelet,'' A female voice says.

''And then Hugo will get the other requirement, and everything will be in place.'' The male voice replies.

I hear them packing up to leave, and I sprint faster back than when I came. My breath is short, but I keep going. I need to talk to James. He's always been the one person that was always there for me, throughout my whole life.
I finally get to the Great Hall, and I run to James.

''James,'' I say, out of breath.

He turns around. ''Rose?'' He asks, concerned. ''..Are you okay?''

''Yes.. and no.'' I say, and sit down. ''Hugo-''

I get cut off by the sound of other students getting to class, it's time to leave. ''I'll tell you later,'' I say, and catch up with Aimee and Lizzie.

''What the hell was that?'' Aimee asks. ''You just ran off!''

''I went to the library,'' I explain. ''To check on.. Hugo.''

They give me looks that clearly express ''What?'' So I explain everything. I feel as if weight is being lifted off my shoulders, and it feels good. When I finish, Aimee speaks.

''Well.. maybe he's going through a rough time. He probably needs you, but he's too afraid to show it.''

''I guess. But what am I going to do about the letter my mum wrote?''

''..Answer?'' Lizzie supplied, sarcastically. ''It's not like she'll flip, Rose, if you tell the truth.''

''I guess I will.'' I say. ''Later.''

And the three of us walk to class.

Great Hall, Dinnertime

It's been a long Tuesday, but I'm not hungry. I feel that if I eat anything, it'll get stuck in my throat, because my stomach feels hollow. I see Aimee and Lizzie eating next to me, and feel awkward. It was always me that was the one stuffing my face with food.

''Rose, eat.'' Aimee commands, and hands me soup. ''Now.''

I grudgingly take the soup and take a sip of one spoonful. All of the sudden, there's a loud bang from the Slytherin table. Every head whips around to see what's happened, but all you see is smoke and Hugo and his two new buddies' faces white with sweat.

''Oops?'' Hugo says, and I glower. He catches my eye, and for a second looks sorry, but it quickly changes to being pissed.

Professor Flitwick stands. ''The three of you, my office, now!'' They get up and walk out of the room, and slowly again the room fills with chatter.

I don't feel like talking.

Gryffindor Common Room, After Dinner[/i]

I waited until everyone went to bed to write my letter. Hugo still isn't back yet, and I'm not surprised.

Dear Mum,
I tried to have an open mind, but yes, they are dangerous. Today, during dinner, something happened, with a giant black BAM! Something's wrong. And Hugo and I are hostile toward each other, so there's not much I can do. I'm sorry. I'll try, though, know I always will. And, Mum, what does 'my worst fears have been confirmed' mean?

Love always,
Rosie

[b]Author's Note:
I finally feel like this story is falling into place. Anyway, comment, please! Oh, and I might be changing up the story a little by putting what month it is in the beginning, just so we can move along faster. For now, think it's September. Thanks all for reading~!

At my uni we've been studying the way gender and sexism shapes the education curriculum.

This was an article we were actually given to read and debate about in a seminar:

"Harry Potter's girl trouble
The world of everyone's favorite kid wizard is a place where boys come first.
By Christine Schoefer

Four factors made me go out and buy the Harry Potter books: Their impressive lead on the bestseller lists, parents' raves about Harry Potter's magical ability to turn kids into passionate readers, my daughters' clamoring and the mile-long waiting lists at the public library. Once I opened "The Sorcerer's...

*The Great Hall was built for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2000 and was used as a key set for six more films. (The Great Hall does not appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1).

*The House Points Counter was rarely seen on screen, but it is rumoured that when it was first built it caused a national shortage of Indian glass beads.

*The spectacular Great Hall includes the costumes of students from each Hogwarts house plus two large tables which are set for dinner; at the top of the room is the teachers' table where the Hogwarts Professors sat. Iconic scenes such as the Yule Ball and the Battle of Hogwarts were filmed here.
