Shivers ran down Gillian's spine, despite the fact she was curled under her quilt. Her blood still ran cold when her memories flashed to Cal being held at gunpoint, even though he was now safely asleep in the next room. She restlessly turned to see the faint red glow of the digital clock beside her. 3:41am. She was restless, her mind still racing from the day's events, her heart had not slowed to a comfortable pace since Cal had escaped with his life. Her eyes were wide open, but her lids still felt heavy, she could not bring sleep upon her. She was scared. She remembered Cal in the room next to her, and as slowly and as quietly as possible she creeped her toes from under the covers and gently placed them on the floor. The floorboards were icy underneath her feet and with each tentative, tiptoed step she took towards the spare bedroom felt safer, being closer to him.
Cal would not let sleep come upon him. He lay there, staring at the ceiling for what would most certainly be almost the entire evening. Any time now Gillian would be up, offering breakfast. He turned to see the clock. He squinted at the hands to try and make out their position in the darkness - about 3.40am. It was still the early hours of the morning. Perhaps he was so anxiously awaiting her arrival with breakfast because it meant the sun had risen; and the light that would shine through his window could dispel the shadows that danced menacingly across the walls, taunting him, reminding him, frightening him. Perhaps, it was because yesterday he had not felt as safe with the police escort in the afternoon as he did in her comforting arms last night. Last night, he had been comforted by her embrace, like he was at home in her arms, like he belonged there.
Cal heard something stir in the hallway. His heart began to race, still haunted by the events of yesterday. Was this a burglary? He pretended to be asleep, knowing if this was a burglary he was being cowardly, especially if Gillian was hurt, but he could not bring courage from within him, even when he thought of Gil. He opened his eyes just enough to see her slim figure standing in the hallway. Once again, he closed his eyes and pretended to be in a deep, peaceful sleep.
Gillian paused, only for a second, when she reached Cal's room. He seemed peaceful, sleeping like a child, while she lay sleepless, worried about him. She tiptoed across the floor until she reached the side of his bed. Slowly and carefully she parted the covers and slipped her body inside. The warmth of his bed was soothing and she slid herself across, closer to him. She could feel his body next to hers, fitting together like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. She pulled the limp arm that lay by his side around her, cradling herself in his arms. Finally, she closed her eyes and drifted into sleep, she was sure she had felt him squeeze his arms around her tighter.
