Giovanni is one of my favorite villains in all of anime. For those that don't know, Giovanni is the villain of the Pokémon anime series. Actually, that's not entirely correct. In some ways, he's the main villain, but in other ways, he's just a supporting character. What do I mean by that? That's what this article is here to explain.

Giovanni is a character that quickly grabbed my attention as soon as he showed up. With his intimidating personality and mysterious presence, I quickly became intrigued by the character. I wanted to learn more about him. Learning more about Giovanni hasn't been easy, because the anime rarely goes into detail about Giovanni's history. He's such an elusive, mysterious character, but if anything, that has made me become more interested in him.

Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket. Team Rocket is a villainous organization that captures the world's most powerful Pokémon. Giovanni wants to use the Pokémon to rule the world.

From that description, Giovanni might sound like he's a major player in the anime. However, that's not exactly the case. Team Rocket is a prominent organization in every season of the anime, but the focus isn't on Giovanni. Instead, the focus goes to Jessie, James and Meowth. Those three characters are employees of Giovanni that want to steal Pikachu, because they believe that he's the most powerful Pokémon. They are more like comedic reliefs than actual antagonists.

Jessie, James and Meowth are henchmen, so they wouldn't really classify as villains. That leaves their boss, Giovanni, as the true villain of the series. Despite that, Giovanni doesn't appear as often as you might expect. Giovanni was introduced in the show's first season. In that season, his face was hidden in shadows. It was clear that he was being built up as a major threat that was causing trouble from behind the scenes. Giovanni made occasional appearances in the season as the grumpy boss who was secretly manipulating Mewtwo, the most powerful Pokémon. Giovanni's complicated history with Mewtwo was also briefly explored in the first Pokémon movie.

After spending the first season as a mysterious villain that operated from behind the scenes, you might expect Giovanni to be a more prominent threat in the show's second season. However, that didn't happen. Instead, Giovanni stopped paying attention to Jessie, James and Meowth, which meant that his role in the series became smaller than it already was. For the following seasons, Giovanni rarely showed up. When he did show up, it was usually in Meowth's fantasies.

Giovanni stepped out of the shadows in Mewtwo Returns. Mewtwo Returns was a movie that had Giovanni come after Mewtwo. What made Mewtwo Returns such a big deal was that Giovanni actually got involved in the action. Instead of having his henchmen do all the work, Giovanni got directly involved with the plot. He even got to encounter the show's protagonist, Ash, for the first time.

For over ten seasons, Giovanni was the villain that operated from behind the scenes and rarely got directly involved with the plot. In season 14, Jessie, James and Meowth had gotten better at their work, so Giovanni started interacting with them more often. In season 15, Giovanni got to interact with Ash for the first time since Mewtwo Returns. In that season, Giovanni became a more active threat that got closer than ever before to taking over the world. After that season, Giovanni returned to being a villain that operated from behind the scenes.

The Pokémon anime series has been going on for over twenty years. That means that Giovanni has spent over two decades as one of the most mysterious villains of all time. Giovanni's elusive nature is a big part of what makes him such an interesting character. However, I think that there is so much more that can be done with the character. I desperately hope that Giovanni gets more to do in future adaptations of Pokémon. Regardless of what will happen, Giovanni will continue to remain a villain that captivates my interest.
