1. The books are told entirely from Katniss' POV. The audience only learns of other events when Katniss learns about them, and if she never becomes aware of something then we never do either. The films include several scenes without Katniss, including scenes of the Game-makers and Snow's reactions and acts of rebellion in various districts.

2. Several minor characters are omitted entirely from the films. These include Peeta's stylist and prep team, Peeta's older brothers and Gale's younger siblings.

3. A more major character also omitted from the films is Madge. She is the daughter of the Mayor of District 12, and befriends Katniss during the series. In the books, she is the one to give Katniss the mockingjay pin to wear as a token. It'd previously been her aunt's token when she died in the Games. In the films, Katniss buys the pin as a gift for Prim and then Prim returns it for her to use as a token. In the books, Katniss also learns about the other districts' rebelling by seeing a report in the Mayor's office, but in the films she sees this on the train.

4. In the books, Katniss recognises the Avox woman serving her as someone she'd seen while hunting in the woods, and been unable to protect from the Peacekeepers. This is omitted from the films.

5. The films omit Peeta's leg injury at the end of the first Games and his resulting amputation and prosthetic. He also doesn't use the injury as an explanation why Katniss should survive instead of him.

6. The films don't make it as clear that Katniss had been faking her love while Peeta believed it to be true. In the book, he argues with Katniss about this once her warning about the Capitol makes him realise the truth. In the film he simply says that he doesn't want to forget.

7. The Hunger Games film shows Seneca Crane being locked in a room with only nightlock berries, being forced to either poison himself, starve to death or find another way to die. The books simply imply that he has been executed.

8. In the Catching Fire book, Katniss meets 2 rebels fleeing from District 8, who tell her of the failed uprising in that district and their hopes for District 13. This scene is missing from the film.

9. Gale is whipped in the book for poaching a turkey which he claims had wandered in from the woods. If the Peacekeepers had been able to prove that he'd been in the woods himself he'd have been executed. In the film, he is whipped for interfering in the punishment of another citizen and assaulting a Peacekeeper.

10. In the Catching Fire book, the crack-down in District 12 leads to Katniss being trapped outside when the fence is re-electrocuted. She injures herself when she climbs a tree to return. This again is omitted from the film.

11. Effie is missing through the majority of the Mockingjay book and only returns at the end. She was given a larger role in the films due to how popular her character had proven.

12. In the Mockingjay film we see the mission to rescue Peeta, Annie and Johanna. Katniss also speaks with Snow directly in an attempt to create more of a distraction. In the book, we are only shown Katniss and Finnick's propaganda interviews while they wait to hear the mission's results.
