Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Team clearly stole this from The Hulk. I predict this to be like any other 3D Sonic game: boring, fiddly and a crap story with useless jargon about chaos emeralds and other pseudo-scientific gibberish. The only way for the Sonic series to be salvaged is if they take the story back to Mobius.
Mirror’s Edge
Looks fantastic and original. A first-person free-running game with hyper-sterile graphics and you don’t actually have to kill people to complete your objective.
Fable 2
At E3, Lionhead showed even more footage of Fable 2. Their “fourth feature” (online co-op) wasn’t as exciting and deep as the other 3 features, but good nonetheless. The trailer starts with a bird flying through Bowerstone, it looked so realistic that when the camera followed the bullet-time bird-crap down towards the hero’s head I actually flinched. Lionhead also allowed the press to try out Fable 2 for themselves. Judging from the footage brought back, I’d say that the game is going to be great.
Nintendo’s stuff
An improved Wii-mote, and a new Wii Sports? THIS is Nintendo’s big feature they were bragging about???? I am incredibly disappointed, myself and a lot of gamers expected news on the new Zelda game or a new Kid Icarus game. I highly doubt I’ll be buying any Wii games in the near future with the exception of the new Wario game or maybe Wii Fit (just to prove it’s a load of crap). I’m almost done with Nintendo, I’ve already gone ahead and bought an Xbox 360 because I’ve been deprived of hardcore-games for so long. They really have changed since Ocarina of Time.
Dead Space
An interesting combination: sci-fi and horror. The game is a third-person-shooter which is set in the future, when earth has run out of resources and needs to search other planets. One of these planets, however; has psychopathic aliens on it, who have mutilated the whole crew, leaving a humble engineer to explore the planet in search of what happened to his friends. Looks like a fun, new look to the survival horror series.
The player’s health is displayed on their spacesuit. In the developer walkthrough, it was said that they tried to reduce the amount of buttons on the screen, stating that many games had a clogged up screen.
Resident Evil 5
Another survival-horror third-person-shooter. Although the developer walkthrough was cheesy (as is the whole Resident Evil series) due to it being translated from Japanese, the actual gameplay looks.... I would say fun but with the possibilities of an RE5 Wii edition looking thin I’d have to say VERY HARD. The gun is very slow to move which can be a pain when you have a load of Ganados/Zombie (or “Stalkers”, as the rumours suggest) running at you. Would be good if you could buy a Light Gun with the game, otherwise I predict many a controller-chucking incident.
Prince of Persia
I find Prince of Persia games generally frustrating and not worth buying, but judging from the footage I’ve seen, that won’t be a problem anymore. It seems that in this strange, new, cel-shaded world; you cannot die, thanks to a weird ghost lady. The protagonist is now a different prince.
Infamous
Looks like a cross between Xmen and Fable. The protagonist survives a huge explosion which killed everyone in the area, as a result he has super powers and needs to decide whether to use them for good or evil. Looks ok, but not great.
Gears of War 2
Seems unoriginal and mindless. A combination of the worst parts of GTA, Dead Rising, and your average-Joe FPS (even though it's a TPS)
I didn’t notice anything else which was particularly interesting or worth mentioning. Nintendo did announce an “Animal Crossing Wii”, but I dislike Animal Crossing and as such I wouldn’t have been able to pick out any positive points of the Wii version.
Stuff I was hoping to see at this year’s E3
Legend of Zelda (Wii)
Kid Icarus (Wii)
Kirby (Wii)
Brawl sequel, (too early?)
Some decent Nintendo games
Resident Evil 5 Wii edition
A new Spyro game
Something BIG! I mean seriously, E3 this year was really empty. I was watching NoobToob yesterday, and they made a pretty good point, E3 used to be… y’know… E3!!! The big thing that we look forward to all year, and now it’s just like “oh, here’s a small trailer which reveals almost no new features or content”. It’s just like any other time of the year. Hopefully GDC won’t go down-hill aswell.
