I sighed as my captor led me through the forest, always ensuring that I was behind him. Something about the way he kept glaring at nee was, ominous. There was a certain depth in his glare, out wasn't just a look of dominance, there was something I couldn't be for sure of. A certain soul piercing sharpness that expressed, something dark. I wasn't certain, but it deemed like hate.
He wasn't exactly the friendliest wolf. He never offered to talk, aside from the occasional grunt of disapproval he shout me when I would ask something. Even light conversation seemed far fetched for him. I tried my best to be polite, but it just didn't seem to work.
"You could at least have the courtesy to tell me your name," I argued to yet another angry grunt.,
"Why can't you just stay quiet," he barked.
"Why can't you be nice to me. You attacked me, and nearly killed me, and despite that I'm still being nice to you," I shouted. It wasn't until after I said it that I realized what I had done.
"Oh god I'm so sor-"
"Hutch," he interrupted. I was just surprised I wasn't dead yet.
"What," I asked in disbelief.
"My name is Hutch," he said again. I smokes and nodded my head.
I wanted to see how much more I could get from him, but I figured I had said enough, and so I remained quiet. Which was probably in my best intentions. It hadn't been too long after learning his name that we came across a small clearing filled with several wolves who were sitting around talking casually, until they saw us.
Everyone fell silent as we approached. As we walked by I heard a few gasps and whispers throughout the crowd. I didn't know what they were saying, I probably didn't want to know.
I wanted to talk to them, but I figured that Hutch would have disapproved of it. The second I would have opened my mouth he would have been forcing me to be quiet. And judging by the stares I was receiving, they probably wouldn't have spoke back anyway.
Once passed the clearing we came upon a rock path leading up the side of a mountain. At the top was a den where two wolves sat side by side starring off into the distance. They were an older couple, probably a couple years older than I was.
The female sat to the right of the male, leaning her head warmly on his shoulder. I felt a strong pain in my stomach seeing this and I cringed in pain. It wasn't a normal physical pain, but more of an emotional pain, like it was a vague memory that I had lost. If it was that painful, I didn't want to remember it.
Her bright, golden fur contrasted heavily against his dark grey, making her stand out brightly. She must've heard us coming because she nudged the male and her let out a sigh. They both turned to see us, causing frowns to shoot over their faces, they obviously weren't happy to see me.
"Sir, I found this trespasser out by the hunting grounds. He had the build of an alpha and claims he has no memory, but I don't trust him. I brought him here for your evaluation," Hutch said in a tone of respect. The old make grunted and walked over to me, looking over it carefully.
"What is your name," he asked me.
"His name it's Blackjack sir," Hutch barked.
"Hutch I'm sure if he is an alpha he can speak for himself, now, where are you from," he asked. I shrugged nervously, unsure of how to respond.
"I-I don't know, I can't remember," I said finally. He looked looked me suspiciously for a moment and then looked at the top of my head as if he saw something.
"Eve, come here for a moment please," he said calmly. The female nodded and walked over to his side as he motioned to my head. She looked for a moment and let out a satisfied hum.
"He's definitely not lying," she said ad the male nodded, obviously confirming some suspicion he had.
"Very well. Given the current state you are in as well as or shortage of help, you may stay here if you like. If so, I will have Candu show you around and help you until you regain your memory," a huge sigh of relief flooded over my body at his offer. I was extremely grateful that he was being nicer than Hutch was, although Hutch wasn't happy at all with that idea. Just then a very short black and grey walked from the den with some herbs around his side.
"Candu, just the wolf I wanted to see. This is Blackjack, he will be starting with us for a while, I would very much appreciate it if you would show him around, I need to have a little talk with Hutch,"
"Sure thing Winston, come on Blackjack," Candu said enthusiastically as he basically pulled me away from the group.
"Well you're energetic," I joked.
"Trust me, you don't want to be around for that conversation," he laughed back.
"You know I'm really glad you are being nicer than what Hutch was,"
"Well, Hutch isn't really that bad of a guy, he just doesn't like outsiders all that much. It's kind of a long and personal story that not a lot of the wolves in the pack know. You seem pretty cool, and Hutch would kill the both of us if I told you,"
"That's alright, you can keep that one for yourself," it felt good to have made a friend. Candu was really nice, and he had a good sense of humor, and being short sure didn't slow him down any. Candu took me all around his packs territory and explained how his pack combined with another pack months earlier. It was a really touching story.
"So you really don't remember anything," he asked curiously. I shook my head honestly.
"Not a single thing. Aside from my name being Blackjack, and that I'm an alpha, whatever that means," I still wasn't sure about the whole alpha and omega thing.
"It's alight, you'll get it eventually. I'll teach you about it a little later, for now let's grab something to eat," my stomach growled in agreeance and he motioned for me to follow him. I started to realize that maybe this place wasn't as bad as I thought.
Meanwhile
"Hutch, you are going to have to learn to control yourself. I realize that what happened two years ago hurt you, believe me it hurt all of us, but not all wolves are the same. You are going to give Blackjack a chance without question. Do I make myself clear," Winston said with irritation heavy in his tone.
"Yes sir," I replied gritting my teeth.
"Good, then you are dismissed,"
I turned away from Winston and walked down the rock path in anger. There was an outsider in the pack, and I wasn't around to watch him. It infuriated me. Winston may have been forgiving, but in my eyes, Blackjack was no better than the piece of filth that ruined my life.
"You may be able to persuade the others, but I will never trust you Blackjack, not after, him,"
