Critical Analysis of Twilight Article: Pet Peeve: Name Mispellings

This is a short little rant, people.

I don't know about you, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when people spell my name wrong.

On Fanpop, I've gotten ranrea, renre, renray, ranraa, and many others. In real life, I've gotten Reagan, Regon, Regen, Reagen.... and people are always misspelling my last name (I'm not displaying that here.)

One thing I've noticed on Fanpop (and many other fansites, as well) is that people often fail to spell Stephenie Meyer's name right. That's right: StephEnie, with an E right there. Not an 'a'. An 'e'.

Some people have completely butchered Meyer's name. Stephanie, Stepheny, even Mayers for her last name. It's spelled Stephenie Meyer. Her name is from her dad, I believe, who was named Stephen.

The thing that annoys me most when people do this is that half of them are Twilighters (Twihards, Fanpires, NewMooners, whatever the heck you wanna call them)- and they should know better. You claim to be soooo obsessed and you know EVERYthing about this book, and then you go and spell the author's name wrong, multiple times!

But I'm not pointing fingers at them, though, Many antis (A lot of whom have read the book, actually) misspell her name, too.

So, seriously. You may hate her, you may love her, but we all owe her the courtesy of spelling her name correctly, right? Right?

Edward_Bella234 I am a twihard (LOL I laugh everytime I hear that!) and I know how to spell Stephenie Meyer's name correctly. I see it spelt wrong all the time and it is annoying. Lots of people spell her last name "Mayer" but it isn't!!

Asvini I think I may have accidentally called her Stephanie a few times, but I do try to get the names right, my name (real, not user) is often either spelled or pronounced incorrectly, and it can get annoying, so I figure if I expect people to try to get my name right I have to try to do the same for everyone else. Something I think is weird is how many Twilighters I've seen get the names wrong, especially Robert Pattison's. I understand an anti not being sure of the name and just taking a stab at it, but I've seen him called Peterson, Patterson, Patson, Pattisen and those were all by really big fans.

November99 If I ever spelled it "Renrea", I'm sorry, that was a typo. Also, I see people spelling Meyer's name wrong (and I do admit to doing this a few times), but the die hard fans who spell it wrong are just rediculous. But then again, most of them can't spell "you" properly. Antis & neutrals I'm more willing to forgive, since they probably could care less.

Plenilunio Sorry if I ever misspelled names. I could give the usual excuse, "not my mother tongue!", which comes in real handy, but the truth is I'm always going too fast in English and my own language and sometimes typos appear althought I try to check. Anyway, it's not only the badly written proper names, but other words. I'm sure all of you have seen horrible things like 'warewolf' or 'werwolf' and, of course, their plurals, 'warewolfs' and 'werwolfs' written by natives. Maybe being a non-native makes me extra fuzzy, but seeing 'there so cute!', 'Jacob and it's prey, Renesmee' or 'your an idiot, there's something wrong with you're brain' and knowing that would have made me fail an exam when I was studying English makes me want to choke someone.

Myf_1992 I don't blame people so much but my spellchecker says my name is wrong, and that Stepheneie is wrong. And that bothers me, my name is not wrong! But yer Twifans should know better, although I'm a fan of Terry Pratchett and sometime I forget the double T at the end of his surname.

snoznoodle This gets to me too! Being called "snozdoodle" doesn't really bother me. Doodle is funnier than noodle. It's an easy mistake. People do actually mispronounce/spell my actual name wrong constantly though. It's Louisa and even when I tell people they repeat it to me a second later and call me Louise. So I feel for Stephenie and I make a point to spell it right. (btw she's named after her father? Now I understand where she got Renesme Carlie from! It's all her parents fault!!) Plenilunio - I don't understand that! How can they mispell a word they'd read how many times?? It doesn't make sense to me!

Asvini Have I ever accidentally called you Snozdoodle? because I totally thought that was your username for a little while. I remember looking and realising 'oops, that says noodle, I hope I haven't been writing doodle.' Snoznoodle is an awesome username by the way, sorry if I've ever doodled it instead of noodling it :P

Myf_1992 I was always scared I would type it wrong, or was getting it wrong, so I always copy and pasted your user name, Snoznoodle! Haha.

renrae Yah, I accidentally put 'Snozdoodle' once, and then 5 seconds later I looked at it again and was like, OH CRAP!

snoznoodle Naw guys it's fine. Snoznoodle was the first thing that popped into my head when I was thinking up a user name. If I thought a little harder I probably would have chosen doodle. Besides the fact it may bring up thoughts about mucus and private parts. Maybe noodle is better.

HecateA I don't like when people spell my name wrong (real name). Especially since I'm French, and in the French language there are two ways of spelling it, but one is for a boy and one is for a girl, so its sort-of offending to me when it gets spelled like a boy. But I don't take it personally.

ArcticWolf I agree with this! I don't usually mind when someone misspells my username (for some odd reason, people insist that ArCtic is spelled ARTIC), but it's a huge pet peeve when people misspell pretty much anything else. I have become slightly irritated over the fact that people can't spell Stephenie's name right. But it's probably just me, because my name is StephAnie as well (but with an 'A'), and to ME personally, the name Stephanie is soooo simple to spell and I feel it should be obvious if you're spelling it wrong. Most people overlook it, but I've always become fixated with it, because they're spelling Stephenie's name like MY name, and, I don't know, it bothers me. :D
