My cousins and I went to bed late last night, July 25th. I had a horrible time sleeping! It felt like I was sleeping on the ground! The three of us woke up sore and tired the next morning to sunlight streaming on our face, which was weird considering we sleep in our grandparent’s basement when we stay for a visit.
"Where the heck are we?” asked Kristen.
"No clue." replied Amanda.
Thankfully, we woke up fully clothed and packed, wallets, phones and chargers, clothes. Whoever did this to us (assuming we weren’t dreaming) even included my 1876 quarter necklace.
"Why do I get the feeling something's up?” I muttered to myself.
I turned around and realized we were somewhere I haven't been in a long time: Central Park! "Guys, I think we're in trouble.” I said.
"Why?" asked Kristen.
"'Cause we're in New York City."
"If this is New York City, why is it so quiet?’ she asked.
I listened, she was right. There was no sound, no cars, no animals, and no kids. It was spooky.
" Well," I said with a grin,” while we're here, do you guys wanna head to the Zoo?"
We began walking to the Zoo to buy tickets. I hadn't been there in years; maybe that's why it looked so strange. It also seemed familiar. I knew something was definitely wrong when I looked at the brochure I was given and found myself staring face to face with a picture of Private, The Penguin. I had chalked it up to being a publicity stunt for "The Penguins of Madagascar."
"Doesn't this look a little too much like the TV show?” asked Kristen.
"You don't think-" I started to say, but I was cut off by bumping in to a Zookeeper... I apologized, and I also recognized her as Alice.
Our suspicions were confirmed when we saw a big group of people standing in front of the Penguin habitat.
"Girls", I said," don't freak out, but I think the Penguins are real!"
"I don't think so." said Amanda.
"Come on," said Kristen, “no one cheers like that for any other penguins out there unless they're doing that "Cute and Cuddly" Thingy."
We pushed our way to the front of the crowd both get a good look at them. I was devising a plan the entire time. "I wonder if they know just how famous they are." I said, tossing a bunch of fish at them. I could've sworn Skipper locked eyes with me, but it was probably just wishful thinking.
We walked around the zoo some more and made sure to stop by the Lemurs so Kristen could say "I have always wanted to meet a Pete and I would very much like for today to be that day!” her favorite Julian quote, to the Lemur King. No one seemed to notice us as we sunk behind the dumpster just as alike was closing up for the day.
"Are you CRAZY? We're locked in!" shouted Kristen.
'It's all part of my plan." I said.
"What Plan?! Top get us arrested or something?!"
"No, to meet the Penguins, and we're now entering phase two. I mean, if all else fails, I can get us to within walking distance of my house and my mom can drive us back to Abuela's or something."
I crept over the fence and hopped on to the Penguin's fake ice floe. Gently scraping the fish bowl door aside, I dropped a small rock into the HQ and heard Voices as I scampered back behind the dumpster.
"When we see them, let’s just break into random kung fu poses." I said.
“I think it came from up here, Skipper.” said Private.
"Private, Rico, Perimeter check, Kowalski, surveillance."
Several minutes later, we heard “All clear.”
“Blast!” He said,” There’s no one up here, no lobster, no rat, no lemur, no puffin! No nothing!”
“Double negatives.” I muttered under my breath, but it must not have been too quiet because Private heard me.
“Sir, there’s someone behind the dumpster!” he called.
“Bravissimo, Young Private! You just caught your first spy!” Said Skipper, dragging Amanda by the wrist, who was saying “ OW,OW,OW,OW,OW,OW”..
“No!” shouted Kristen and jumped out of her hiding spot, but she was tackled by Rico before she could get to her sister.
I had no choice but to come out as well, saying,” here I am, come and get me!” Not the best thing to say before being taken prisoner, but these guys were a kid’s TV show, they couldn’t hurt us for real, could they?
Kowalski knocked me down while skipper stood on my chest, no doubt judging me.
“So, you and your team just think you can waltz in here and make off with out secrets, huh?” he demanded, “Who are you and who do you work for?!”
“I don’t work for anybody! You’re accusing me of being a spy for, who.. Blowhole or .. or the Red Squirrel?”
“How do you know those names?!”
“Long Story.” Look, Skipper, Do you honestly think that two fourteen year olds and a nine year old girl can actually be spies for some supervillan?”
“He does have a point, Skipper”, said Kowalski, releasing me.
“Urggh! For cryin’ out loud, just use that Hot Sauce bottle full of truth serum to interrogate us!”
“Kowalski?”
“Sorry, no can do, Skipper, I’ve run out of the Truth Serum and the Amnesia Spray.”
“How did you get here?” asked Private
“We have no clue, we went to bed last night, and when we we woke up, we were here!”:, said Kristen
“Well, since I can’t erase your memories, how would you three like to join? We could always use new recruits.”, said Skipper
