This is how Growing Pains would be like if I was in charge, more or less. Based on what information we do know about this episode.

Caroline and Matt are in the Mystic Grill and Caroline tells Matt not to blame himself. Matt explains that he never thought Elena would do something like that for him, but Caroline calls him stupid and tells him Elena loves him as her own brother. Matt then declares how much he hates that everything is changing. Caroline says that things can only get better, as Klaus is dead. Klaus, still in Tyler’s body, walks through the woods and suddenly speeds off.

Elena wakes up in bed, wondering if she’s dead. Stefan and Damon tell her that she’s in transition. Damon says she has to feed and leaves. Stefan follows him and tells Damon she needs both of them to help her. Damon says this was always inevitable, but Stefan tells him Elena never wanted this. They argue about Stefan’s decision to save Matt. Matt then arrives and Damon attacks him. Stefan stops him, but Matt concedes it was his fault. Elena is listening to this. Damon then leaves angrily just as Jeremy arrives. Jeremy sees Elena and they hug.

Caroline’s in the woods and begins to sense something around her. She turns around and Klaus is there. Excited to see Tyler, she tries to ask what happened before kissing him. Klaus tries to explain but they begin making out. Bonnie is searching through grimoires when Jeremy arrives and tells her Elena seems okay. Bonnie asks if he is, and Jeremy explains that he’s not sure if he should be happy she’s not entirely dead or upset she’s a vampire. Bonnie tells him she’s finding a way to save Elena’s human soul.

Klaus pushes Caroline away and briefly says he can’t do this before rushing off, leaving Caroline calling Tyler’s name. Stefan asks Elena where she is with everything, and she explains she never thought she’d be in this position. Stefan assures her he’s here for her, but she asks for some time alone. He’s leaving when she hears a noise so goes and sees what’s going on and finds Stefan being held at gunpoint by several townsfolk. A man appears and introduces himself to Elena: he’s Pastor Young.

Caroline runs into Rebekah at the Mystic Grill. Caroline lets it slip that Tyler’s alive and Rebekah, confused, asks why Caroline’s still alive if Klaus is dead. Caroline assumes the bloodline thing was a myth. They are being watched, however. They begin talking about Stefan and Elena, and Caroline explains that they’ll always be in love. Rebekah assumes that maybe it was for the best when Klaus daggered her. Caroline agrees, leading to Rebekah threatening her. Caroline is leaving the Mystic Grill when she’s shot. Rebekah, hearing this, also leaves to look around but is shot herself.

Stefan and Elena are locked in cages and through the bars, Stefan assures her it’ll all be okay and Bonnie’s going to save her. Elena asks about him, but he doesn’t answer. Damon goes to the Mystic Grill for a drink. Caroline and Rebekah are trapped in a van after being dosed with vervain and wooden bullets.

Jeremy goes over to Bonnie, explaining how Elena’s not answering her phone. Bonnie says that she’s probably just scared of everything that’s happening to her. Damon takes several shots by himself. Bonnie and Jeremy arrive home and discover Elena’s gone. Bonnie tries to contact Caroline, but there’s no answer. Panicking, Jeremy asks Bonnie where they are.

Pastor Young addresses the Town Council and informs them that they have captured four vampires which will be killed immediately. Sheriff Forbes and Carol Lockwood overhear this, and come to the conclusion that they have to help the vampires.

Bonnie finds Elena and tells her that it’s going to be okay and she doesn’t have to die. She explains that she’s going to bring Elena’s human soul back from the dead. Elena tells her not to, because of the risk, but Bonnie ignores her and gets shot. Elena begins crying for her, but Pastor Young arrives and asks who’s going to die first. He also informs Elena and Stefan that he’s got two other vampires held captive. Elena mutters Caroline’s name but then collapses.

Elena wakes up and, exhausted, tells Stefan she’s dying. He yells “NO!” and tries to break out. Jeremy and Matt then arrive and help Stefan and Elena out. Elena is weak and cannot move and Jeremy knows she’s dying and needs to feed. Stefan complains, but Matt feeds Elena his blood and Stefan carries her out.

As “You’re Gone” by Rio Diamond plays, Stefan, Elena, Jeremy, and Matt escape; Pastor Young gets shot by Sheriff Forbes; Caroline and Rebekah’s van crashes and is destroyed; Klaus sits in silence, staring at nothing; Damon continues to drink, thinking of Elena; Bonnie returns to see Elena has fed and begins crying; and Bonnie, Stefan, Elena, Matt, and Jeremy escape the Town Council, Bonnie taking them out in the process. The song ends with Elena, in bed, waking up and gasping for air, similar to how she did earlier in the episode.
