Dungeons & Dragons (or D&D for short) is a super fun tabletop roleplaying game that's been around since the 1970s but has recently gained a fair bit of popularity. I've been playing the game for around eight years at time of writing, and I strongly recommend you give it a try if you ever get the chance. It's really an absolute blast! D&D has always been one of my favorite hobbies, but within the last two years it's become an even bigger part of my life. Since I've been having so much fun with it recently, I decided it was finally time to try something I'd always wanted to do: turning the Disney Princesses into D&D characters.
Over the last year I've been slowly creating D&D characters based off of the DPs, and I spent so much time on them that I really wanted to share them here. I'll be posting a series of articles, one for each DP, in which I explain why I chose the classes, subclasses, etc. for each princess, and share the backstory I wrote for each. I'll also be crossposting these articles to the D&D club. All the characters will be level 3 to ensure that they all have a chosen subclass. Sourcebooks used to build these characters include the Player's Handbook, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Since I expect many of you here don't play D&D or maybe even haven't heard of it, I'll begin with the backstory I wrote since you might find that the most interesting. Below the backstory you'll find the more nitty gritty stats of the characters. Anything written in italics is an author's note explaining my reasoning behind certain character choices.

Kida
Dark Elf Rogue - Inquisitive / Background - Noble
Yes, I know that Kida isn't an official DP but I woke up today and chose ANARCHY. Actually I chose anarchy in multiple ways when making her character. First, I chose not to make her a human. I know she's technically a human in the movie but come on... 8000 years old? Silver hair? Dark skin? Lives underground? If that's not a dark elf I don't know what is. I made her a rogue since she successfully sneaks up on Milo the first time they meet, and I went with the Inquisitive subclass because she is so curious about everything and always seeks greater understanding about the world around her. I gave her the noble background because she was born and raised a princess.
Backstory
Backstories have been created with a combination of the stories from the films and rolling randomly on the random tables in the "This Is Your Life" section of Xanathar's Guide to Everything, which is why some of these backstories have some wild things that really come out of left field lol.
I was born to Keyleth and Kashekim Nedakh, the rulers of Atlantis. When I was very young, our kingdom was one of the most powerful and prosperous in the land, but my people had grown arrogant and the gods grew angry with us. As punishment, they cast our kingdom beneath the waves, relegating us to survive in deep underwater caverns. In the chaos, my mother was taken by the magical crystal that we receive our power from, a sacrifice to protect the rest of the citizens, and she was lost to us forever. I was so young at the time that I barely remember it.
I was raised by my father. We helped our citizens as best we could to carve out a new life in this strange environment. I had a few close friends, but was always curious about the world beyond our caverns.
I spent many centuries serving as princess of Atlantis, doing my best for my people and serving my father and king, forever devoted to him. But as the millenia passed, sequestered away from the outside world, we lost much of our knowledge of the arcane.
One day, a small band of adventurers somehow found their way to our network of caverns. Led by an explorer named Milo, they had come in search of ruins, never expecting our city might still be inhabited. I was ecstatic to meet outsiders for the first time in my memory, and with Milo's help I was able to recover some of the long lost knowledge of our civilization.
Unfortunately, some of the members of Milo's band betrayed us. They were secretly working for an art collector who uses illegal means to acquire masterpieces and rare magical artifacts. They were intent on getting their hands on my people's crystal. We managed to stop them, and one of them was killed, but one of them, a human woman named Helga Sinclaire, managed to escape.
Milo chose to stay with my people to continue assisting them with reclaiming our culture, while I chose to take this chance to explore the surface world for the first time in my life.
I've been exploring the surface searching for Helga and her employer. I became a rogue because I’ve always been nimble and quick of wit, so I decided to use those talents to help me make my way in the world. I've even found myself a benefactor: a magistrate who recently kept me out of jail in return for information on a powerful crime lord I'd been stalking. I've been enjoying my explorations, and have been gleefully adding to my new collection of exotic coins along the way.
Yes I named her mom Keyleth. Don't @ me if you understand that reference. It was literally the only female elf name that starts with a K in XGtE. Had to change a lot to make this backstory work. XGtE was no help either, I rolled the worst stuff on the tables!! Literally decided not to use anything I rolled because it was useless. I kept Helga alive cuz I like her. I guess Kida's father is still alive too so he can rule while she goes and explores the surface world. Loosened Kida's morals a bit as well to make her work well as a rogue. Overall unhappy with this backstory but you can't win em all I guess.
Character Stats
Level 3
STR 0 (10) DEX +3 (17) CON +1 (12) INT +1 (13) WIS +2 (14) CHA -1 (9)
I used the standard array to generate stats. I tried to assign them in a way that would allow for a strong D&D character while still remaining mostly true to the attributes of the character in the film.
HP 21
AC 14 (leather)
Initiative +3
Speed 30 ft.
Darkvision 120 ft.
Saving throws: Dex +5, Int +3 - You have advantage on saves against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Skills: History +3, Insight +6, Investigation +5, Perception +4, Persuasion +1, Sleight of Hand +5, Stealth +5 (For her class skills I gave her Insight, Investigation, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth. We know she's stealthy, and sleight of hand just seems like something she'd be good at. Inquisitive rogues rely pretty heavily on insight and investigation, so I gave her Expertise in those, plus we know she loves to investigate stuff. Perception was granted by her race and History and Persuasion were granted by her background.)
Languages: Common, Elvish, Thieves' Cant, Undercommon (I can just picture her investigating the seedy underbelly of the surface world and learning Undercommon.)
Tools: Playing Card Set, Thieves' Tools
Features and Traits
Trance: You don't need to sleep, but meditate semiconsciously for 4 hours a day. While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Sunlight Sensitivity: You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Perception checks that rely on sight when you, your target, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.
Drow Magic: You know the dancing lights cantrip. [3rd] You can cast faerie fire once per long rest. CHA is your spellcasting ability.
Sneak Attack: Once per turn, you can deal an extra 2d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack with a finesse or ranged weapon if you have advantage on the attack roll. You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 ft. of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.
Thieves’ Cant: You have learned thieves’ cant, a secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. It takes four times longer to convey such a message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.
Ear for Deceit: Whenever you make an Insight check to determine whether a creature is lying, treat a roll of 7 or lower on the d20 as an 8.
Spells
Cantrips (at will): Dancing Lights
1st level: Faerie Fire
These spells were automatically granted by her race, I didn't choose them.
Actions
Dagger: +5 to hit, 1d4+3 piercing damage
Shortbow: +5 to hit, 1d6+3 piercing damage
Shortsword: +5 to hit, 1d6+3 piercing damage
Bonus Actions
Cunning Action: You can take a bonus action on each of your turns to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
Eye for Detail: You can use a bonus action to make a Perception check to spot a hidden creature or object or to make an Investigation check to uncover or decipher clues.
Insightful Fighting: As a bonus action, you can make an Insight check against a creature you can see that isn’t incapacitated, contested by the target’s Deception check. If you succeed, you can use your Sneak Attack against that target even if you don’t have advantage on the attack roll, but not if you have disadvantage on it for 1 minute or until you use this feature against a different target.
That's it for Kida! I hope you enjoyed reading. If you have any questions or opinions I'd love to hear them in the comments! See you tomorrow with another princess~
