It was her first time actually getting into a relationship, a serious one anyhow. Riven wasn't much to boast about even she knew that. But hey, he said he loved her and that was enough. Or it should be enough. Riven never really seemed to see anything Musa's way. It was always 'Riven, Riven Riven, what does Riven want? How should she appease Riven.' Which wasn't exactly what she wanted. He just never seemed to see anything from Musa's point of view--he had the mentality of a little boy. It almost seemed like he was afraid to give up even a little power.

There were so many points at which Musa felt like she couldn't continue their relationship because it wasn't worth it. He was a liar, she knew he wasn't 'at his parents' house' every night at 6. But denial was Musa's happy place. She wanted to see the best in him, to think he could change.

And the people around them knew it too, they all saw what happened behind the scenes. Or at the very least filled in the blanks when they saw him out on the street with some random woman. Of course Riven heard them when they said he was good for nothing at that Musa deserved better. And how could he deny it, it was true. She did deserve better. And for whatever reason, Musa was Hellbent on proving them wrong, more Hellbent than Riven himself. She simply would not let him go. And he didn't know why, he didn't give her any reason to remain at his side.

Another muffled shout and she slammed the door in his face. He was so close too, so close to doing the right thing, the thing he'd been planning to do from the very beginning. And for once Riven found himself begging Musa to let him back in. He could explain. Musa was officially sick of his crap.

"We just can't stop believing 'cause we have to try we can rise above their truth and their lies."

Had he really been that bad of a boyfriend? Were their lies that powerful? Even so Riven decided to continue with his plan. He went to the lady...his employer asking if he earned the week off yet. She smiled, nodded yes, and handed him his paycheck. He then walked to the store across town and handed the man at the counter the check. The man walked into the storage room and returned with the headphones; studded in gems of all sorts with heavenly sound quality--Riven checked, he had to be sure they were perfect. Riven knew it, without the money to buy a bus ticket or a ride of his own, he'd be home late again. Musa's dorm was a long way away from the shop, but if that long walk was what it took to make her birthday special he'd do it. For once the boy made it to Musa's dorm before midnight. Needless to say, he was not invited. Musa's 5 friends served as strong bodyguards.

Riven wouldn't be detoured that easily; the next day he sat himself right by the fountain, birthday gift in his right hand, and proof of his employment in the other. It wasn't long before the girl came around the corner. Before she could speak Riven began telling her of how he found her the perfect gift and he wanted to get it to her one way or another. That he was so determined that he worked from the time he got out of class to 6:00 and totally sucked up to his boss until he earned enough to buy her the headphones. This earned him a laugh and a 'you're pathetic'. But it was all done in a light-hearted manner as his girlfriend accepted the gift. 'Man Riven you are one smooth bro.' He told himself as Musa slid on the headphones, encouraging him to sing along with her.
