Harry Potter Vs. Twilight Article: My Feelings Towards Bella Swan

Believe it or not, I do not hate Twilight. The plot is fair, internesting setting, a lot of the characters are good, and not to mention the brilliant fight scenes! The soundtracks are lovely as well as the actors/actresses. Overall, I would give the entire series a C+. I would give it a higher grade if it wasn't for the poor writing, rambling, and somewhat extreme fans. But what's really the anchor of that sinking ship is the books' protagonist and narrator...

Bella Swan.

Of course there's a main character in almost every book I read that I really do not like. For example: in Hunger Games, it's Peeta. In Harry Potter it's Ginny. However, unlike Bella, I don't like Ginny and Peeta because they're almost like distractions to the main characters (Katniss and Harry of course). I don't like Bella simply because she's just a bad person overall. My negativity towards Twilight has nothing to do with the generic comments such as: 'Vampires don't sparkle' or '[insert name here] can't act" but it as almost everything to do with Bella. I have a bone to pick with her, and in all honesty I would like to beat the daylights out of her with it.

1. Bella with Charlie
I absoloutely love Charlie. He's Quiet, loves sports, patient, loving, caring, and most imporantly LOVES his kid. In the first two books, Bella was pretty respectful to Charlie. I completely understood the "Just let me go, Charlie!" at the end of Twilight because she was simply trying to protect him and the note she left Charlie in New Moon when she was going off to save Edward (because she knew she was going to be punished afterwards). But Bella went totally out of hand in the end of New Moon. If you've read the books, by now you should know that Charlie really enjoyed Bella's company and it was almost like having his wife back. In New Moon Charlie tells Bella that she is grounded (which was aware of) and that she is not allowed to see Edward Cullen ever again because he's a bad boyfriend. In return Bella says "Fine, I'll move out and live with the Cullens." That was a really low blow. And Charlie looked absoloutely dissapointed with himself. But of course Bella was having too much fun packing her things to finally live with her boyfriend to notice her hurt her own father was. Charlie was right, first of all. Being completely unaware that Edward was a vampire, I totally understood why Charlie wanted them to break up. It was their second break up and the first one was what lead Bella to "move back in with her mom" and tell Charlie what his own wife told him when she was leaving. Bella even put up a front when Charlie wasn't allowing Edward to come to the house more in Eclipse. Well Bella, let's think: you returned home from your first break up with Edward covered in blood because you "fell down the stairs and through a window" all while Edward was trying to "talk you out of moving out", Edward leaves her in the woods 2 days after her birthday crying from their break up, Edward is the reason why Bella stares out of her window for several months and screams in the middle of the night, Bella runs away to Italy while her father is at a funeral because of Edward, and after all of this Edward returns and everything is back to "normal". But of course Bella is too selfish to notice and Smeyer is trying to make it look as if Charlie is the bad guy. Charlie was a great father to Bella but when Edwards comes into her life, she's a total jerk in return and pays him back by making him dinner. Bella is more respectful to Carlisle who is not her father.

2. Bella with Mike Newton/other human friends
I find it funny when people think that I'm kidding when I say that Bella should have ended up with Mike Newton. Mike Newton was the only person in the entire series that stayed by Bella's side for the entire time. Angela Weber was very loyal as well. If you've read at least of the beginning of Midnight Sun then you'd know that both Angela and Mike really liked Bella when they first met her. But of course Bella ignores them because Edward Cullen is the best boyfriend ever (even though he dumped you left you depressed for several months and has tried to kill you). Bella never noticed that Mike, Angela, her other human friends, and Charlie were some of the only people who cared about her but, like I said before, her head was too wrapped around Edward and she refused to appreciate anything else.

3. Bella with Jacob
I really liked Twilight and beginning of New Moon Jacob. He was a great friend and could have easily been a great boyfriend. Bella had her chance to take her relationship with Jacob and soar off with it. What made me 'Team Edward' was when Edward returned which totally changed Jacob into a different person (due to hatred and jealousy). I believe that Smeyer altered almost all of his characteristics and made them darker to make Edward look like an angel and Jacob like a devil. Anyway, towards the end of Eclipse we're all fully aware that Jacob was in love with Bella and Bella has absolutely no idea what to do to keep both Jacob and Edward happy. Kissing Jacob was a last resort option. But at the same time, did she really have to kiss him? Jacob is an awful friend for persuading his ENGAGED best friend to kiss him. At times like this, Bella's selfishness should have came out. She needed to defend herself properly. Her boyfriend proposed her 24 hours ago. On her finger is his mother's ring. Now is time to make a choice, Bella. She was wrong for kissing Jacob and he was wrong for initiating it. I do feel for Bella because she had no idea what to do in this situation. But cheating on your fiancee is never the solution.

4. Bella with Bella
Bella had absoloutely no idea what she wanted in life aside from Edward. She put Edward before her own self, her family, and her friends. She turned down amazing schools for Edward and wasted what was supposed to be the funnest stage of her life all for Edward. What makes he really not like her is the fact that she did all these things for Edward all while there is no love in the relationship. They say 'I love you' every so often but they fail to really show it. Their relationship is built off of obsession and lust. I still find Edward and Bella's marriage disturbing because it was only done for sex. Unlike Harry Potter, Twilight is a strictly female YA/A book whereas Potter is for all ages and both sexes and since Smeyer has a bigger fanbase of young girls, she should be selling POSTIVE messages to to. Bella is supposed to be the ideal head female that we are supposed to look up to. This means that we're supposed to marry for sex, listen to a majority of out boyfriends/husbands' demands, obsess about them, almost kill ourselves when they leave us, throw away all of our hopes and dreams to accomidate their needs. But in Bella's case, what hopes and dreams? She has no characteristics aside from 'clumsy'.

cassie-1-2-3 There's no law that says people have to respect their father at all times. I don't care about the emotional aspect of the situation. The bottom line is that Charlie had no legal right to ban Bella from her boyfriend. Bella could have moved out if she wanted. She's allowed. What did Edward do to Bella besides break up with her? He hurt her feelings, oh well. He's not legally responsible for Bella's depression, and there's nothing illegal about making someone sad. Edward was not at fault here. Some people may not [i]like[/i] the system, but that doesn't matter. It is what it is.

cunha27 Bella was well within her rights to move out. In fact moving out was the right thing to do. She was an adult and old enough to decide for herself who she should go out with or not. It was not up to Charlie to pick her boyfriends. She was also right to be angry with her father as it was demeaning for Charlie to make such a demand on Bella. Bella should have moved out because at the end of the day Charlie was also entitled to have whatever rules he wanted in his household. As Bella did not agree with them and did not want to live by those rules, the logical step was to move out. Charlie should have felt bad and apologised to Bella. Lucky that at least Bella seemed to be aware they were living in the 21st century and not the 19th when fathers and husbands had total control over their daughters/wives lives and reproductive rights.

alexisn10 It has nothing to do with laws. It's all just simple morals. Move out for a necesarry reason not for some guy. Bella knew that Charlie was very lonely when Bella and her mother but Bella didn't care. She put Edward right before her own father. I don't know but that all sounds really messed up espcially because Charlie put up with her while she was depressed while Edward was doing God knows what. Bella dramatized the situation. Yes, Bella could have moved out if she wanted to but remember, her own father really enjoyed her company and her presence kept him from being lonely. She was selfish daughter for even bringing it up! @cassie/cunha Charlie had no idea what went on in the woods. Seeing how depressed Bella was from it, he probably though Edward raped her or hit her or something. She was in fetal position crying for several hours. As a cop and a dad, Charlie had to watch out for that guy. I don't blame him for hating Edward.

cunha27 The issue isn't wether he was right to hate or not hate Edward. The problem is that regardless of how he felt about Edward, he had no right to make such a demand on Bella. I have a very, very, very strict dad (was not allowed to date at all) who I know loves me very much, but even he knows the limits to his authority over me and has enough respect and consideration to have never made those kinds of demands on me once I became an adult. He respects me enough to let me make my own choices. If he thinks they're bad ones, he'll [i]advise[/i] me against it, he'd never demand I do what he wants me to do. My mind boggles at the amount of criticism that usually gets thrown at Bella for "setting women's rights backwards" when she supposedly is submissive with Edward, and then when she exerts her rights as an adult, she gets criticised for being rude and unfeeling. Charlie was in the wrong big time and Bella reacted as she should have

cassie-1-2-3 As an enforcer of the law, Charlie has to be reasonable. Bella had no marking to indicate physical abuse. Even after she was evaluated by a doctor. If Charlie is going to go around enforcing new rules just because of something he thinks that is not based on any physical evidence, then I think Bella should have moved out. Depression is not always brought on by majorly traumatic and violent experiences, but I know where you stand on that... so I'll just let that go. I would think Charlie would know better, though.

alexisn10 @cunha27 I would have made the same demand if Edward left my daughter in that condition. She screamed in the middle of the night because of him and ignored almost everyone that spoke to her. Charlie had to deal with that for months. Bella wasn't wrong for standing up for Edward but she [i]was[/i] wrong for threatning to move out. She could have easily said "Look dad, I know he was wrong but I've forgiven him. I love him and this is real". Charlie is sympathetic and it'd take him a while to get over it but he finally would.

tsmith120 Fair enough. Legal age means nothing, parents are often going to want to protect their children anyway - and that's a good thing, in my opinion. And I don't think that bella should have given Charlie that "low blow", it seems childish and petty. Did she think "shall I think about his perspective? The guy who's had to put up with me doing all this crazy shit without a full explanation?" Nah, she thinks "I want, I want, I want, me me me me my my my my my now now now..."(along those lines, it seems). If she'd been patient with him, shown him it was a perfectly rational decision to get back with Edward then Charlie may have come around, and would resent the two less for it. She just doesn't seem to be able to look past herself, which makes her a weak protagonist and poor role model. Actually, a lack of character seems to make her a weak protagonist.

ClaireVoyant I like charlie when I read the first book. charlie is actually a good father, and some of his action are actually make sense! he have reason to distrust edward! if only bella will stop thinking about her own interest and start to think about people other than vampires (her father! her family!) that care for her too. @cunha I disagree if you said that he become chauvinist pig, extremely one sided view. because bella are at fault too, when it comes to caring about people other than edward she completely crap at it.... try to see from his Point Of View not just from bella.... being adult doesn't make your family unimportant to your life, parents will always cared for their children no matter what their age are. and threatening/throwing tantrum like what bella's doing to charlie are not exactly a mature thing to do, sit down and talk are. -.-

cunha27 @ tsmith: There's a time and place to be understanding and even to put up with a loved one's behaviour that under normal circumstances you'd find unacceptable, however there are a number of things that are non negationable and should never be tolerated. Depriving an adult of their freedom and keeping them away from their chosen life partner is one such thing. Charlie was supposedly the more mature of the two, yet it was up to Bella to draw his attention to how ridiculously out of line his demands were, and yes she did have to speak to him that way because he was refusing to listen to her. Loving someone and wanting the best for them is not a valid excuse or a pass to walk all over someone's rights. Legal age means a lot. It means one is responsible for their own actions and should be treated accordingly. It was not up to Bella to wait for Charlie to calm down and maybe come round to her way of thinking because he was in the wrong. What kind of role model puts up with totally unacceptable behaviour and then patiently waits however long it takes for the transgressor (who should know better) to calm down and maybe, possibly, if she chooses the right words, come around to her way of thinking? A weak one! This is one of the times where Bella shows herself as strong and willing to fight for what she finds important. @ ClairVoyant: no, not a one sided view, a different view from yours. I didn't say he was a chauvinistic pig, I said he [b][i]was being[/b][/i] a chuvenistic pig - there is a difference. I like Charlie as well, but in this instance he was very wrong, and it was right for Bella to have put her foot down and not let him get away with it. Her reaction was a lot more mature than Charlie's.

cassie-1-2-3 Caring for your father does not mean that you much obey his every command. It is possible to make personal decisions for yourself AND still care about the people who oppose. This wasn't just some simple advice, like telling Bella what type of savings account she should open or to eat more vegetables. This was a decision that would effect her entire life. Just so you guys can relate... Imagine you're a legal adult and you came into a lot of money. Enough money to pay for your entire college tuition. Now imagine that your father decides to forbid you to going to the one University you want to go most. No other Universities offer the opportunities you desire. His only reasoning is that the location of the university has really bad weather. Would you allow him to forbid you, or would you disobey his orders and go to school where you want to go to school. You're an adult, he's not paying, why should it be his decision?

You NEVER throw low blows at your parents or even anyone in particular. cassie-1-2-3 Carlisle never tried to control Bella's dating life. But it's still true that Charlie has no legal authority over Bella. This is just a fact, it has nothing to do with liking or disliking Bella. The same applies to all legal adults. She doesn't have to do ANYTHING he says. But she respects him enough to be grounded, despite being 18. She respects him enough to still do chores around the house. She respects him enough to continue to follow his rules. But when he makes an unreasonable rule, she has every right to not obey. Sorry, but when do you suggest a person take control of their own life?

Bella was more than willing to stand up for herself and her convictions. “They say 'I love you' every so often but they fail to really show it.” - Edward fought James hand to hand to protect Bella. He exerted incredible control to stop himself from draining her totally, he refused to change her into a vampire because he wanted her to enjoy being alive and didn't want her to give up anything. He shared the secret of his true nature with her, ie that he was a vampire. He explained to her in detail the dangers involved with having a relationship with a vampire. He left her so she would be safe from Vampires. He married her. He cut short his honeymoon to rush her to a doctor when he found out she could be pregnant and how dangerous it was to her. He stayed with Bella and was totally distraught as she wasted away before him. Bella put herself in constant danger by being around vampires, she travelled all the way to Italy to save Edward, she stood her ground against a powerful vampire clan, she withstood opposition to her relationship from everyone, she married him, she became a vampire so as to spend eternity with him, etc. The series is nothing but one proof over another that Bella and Edward love each other. “Their relationship is built off of obsession and lust. Because Bella was more than willing to have sex with Edward before getting married. There was nothing stopping them from having premarital sex. She simply wrote a romance about an average young woman and a vampire. It just happened that people bought the books, read them decided they liked them and THEN became fans. A writer should write their own story, not give in to pressure and change it simply because the readers or their parents want something to happen a certain way. Besides there is no such thing as an ideal “head female.” Every woman is different and has different strengths, weaknesses and quirks. What's ideal for someone is totally unsuitable for someone else. Bella is just an example of one type of woman. I haven't read the books in a while but I do remember Edward calling Bella Mrs. Cullen and her being frightened by her new name. From child books to adult books. Age has nothing to do with it. The themes I'm finding in Twilight aren't very inspiring (ex. eternal youth is the only thing that leads to beauty/male dependency...)

cassie-1-2-3 I don't get why people only allow Bella and Edward to provide themes for them, but allow Neville, Hagrid, Luna, and Dobby to actually contribute to what the Harry Potter series is. Were Alice, Rene, Rosalie, Leah, Sue, Esme, Kate, Angela, Irene, Jane, and all the other females "male dependent" also? Bella probably depended on people who happened to be male the most, but why is she the only character anyone considers? It's only a theme if it's reoccuring among different aspects of the story. Not something that just happens once, or with only one character.

If Bella had been such a bad friend as everyone keeps making her out to be, she would not have invited any of them to her wedding and if she had, none of them would have turned up to it, let alone be happy to be there. Even Jacob showed up for Bella even though he did not agree with Bella getting married. [b]Bella's hope and dreams:[/b] Again it's very normal for someone at 18 to either have no idea at all about what they want in life (yes, even a tiny bright idea) or to change their mind about it. Either she has no idea about what to do with her life and therefore has no hopes and dreams or she knew what she wanted to do with her life but threw it all away to be with Edward. [b]The marriage only being done for sex point[/b] – Getting married wasn't as important to Bella as it was to Edward. Her parents were divorced and she'd been brought up by her mum to view marriage as something unnecessary and even stupid. It was however very important to Edward. At the same time it was very important to Bella that she got to experience sex with Edward while she was still a human, something Edward was very much against. He had no problems with doing it after she'd been turned but not before as he didn't want her to get hurt. So they discussed what they wanted and made compromises. That's as it should be in relationships. Bella got married because it was important to Edward and Edward had sex with Bella before turning her because it was important to Bella. [b]Regarding message in Twilight[/b] - “All books have themes. From child books to adult books. Age has nothing to do with it”- Yes, all books have themes, but not all books have an explicit message or are intended to teach or preach. This is particularly true with works of fiction. eg the main theme in Harry Potter is death, in Twilight it's choices. The whole series is about the choices Bella has and makes. Moving to Forks or staying with her mum, Jacob or Edward, marriage or not, becoming a vampire or staying human, etc, etc. It doesn't however preach us about what choices she should have made nor tell us what is the right choice and what is the wrong choice. The message you took from Twilight is your own interpretation of the book, not what the book is about.

cunha27 @ cassie-1-2-3: I agree totally with you. It's part of the reasons why even though I'm slightly more of a HP fan, I find that I have to come to the defence of Twilight more often. I find it annoying the double standard in the way arguments are made and presented when comparing both books. Specially in regards to Bella. All her bad points are nitpicked, exaggerated, taken out of context and anything positive is either dismissed or ignored.
