lililc nice article, i personally find mulan underrated outside fanpop, she deserves to be a good model for little girls, i also think cinderella is overrated by merchandise but underrated in character terms (i saw an article saying she is the worst princess) her personality is not enougth apreciated

laylastepford I don't think Mulan is underrated at all. Aren't they making her live-action movie next? So they completely skipped Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine and Pocahontas just to jump to her. I don't think that's underrating her.

wavesurf Good article! At least in my experience, I've found that princess merchandising is very different, and is a completely separate thing that impacts a princess's individual popularity. For example: Mulan has virtually no merchandise except for the toys that sold in 1998 when her movie first came out. Same with Pocahontas. The only merchandise you can find are dolls and toys circa 1995. Disney does not market Mulan or Pocahontas. They aren't exactly well-known, except for their fanbases. People label them "not really Disney princesses" much of the time. Cinderella is well-loved because of the "age" of the Perrault story that Walt himself drew from, and she is iconic for being Walt's favorite princess...whether one is willing to admit to that fact or not. Snow White is known for being the first Disney Princess. As for her popularity, it's kind of mixed. She is less popular than Elsa, Anna, Cinderella, and Ariel, that's for sure. Tiana is underrated largely because her movie wasn't much of an adventure. The movie stayed in the same location: New Orleans. It focused on creating a princess who "was working hard" but forgot to make her "warm, caring, and adventurous." Tiana was basically a homebody with a single goal: her restaurant. And little kids want sparkly princesses dresses and a song, and don't exactly know why things like "one's socioeconomic status" matter. TPATF was touch and go for Disney, because 1) Tiana was Disney's first African American princess, and 2) it's hard to turn a segment of real American History like the segregation of the 1920s, into a magical adventure, and 3) Disney completely skipped over Caucasian prejudice against African Americans which was truly "realistic" of the time period. Basically, Tiana and Charlotte would never have run in the same circles, and would never have been friends in real life. It's okay, sometimes, when Disney re-imagines and tweaks a beloved fairy-tale. A fairy-tale was never real in the first place! It's a whole different thing for some people to feel "transported" when the actual historical setting was as far from magical as possible. Sparklefairy375 I obviously agreed why Pocahontas is very under-rated. The movie is just bland and plain. The animation of scenery is absolutely beautiful, but the plot is kinda weak. Even I don't think kids who watched it understand the story in the form of a feud between two different groups. But I hate when Mulan's just because of she's not real princess and Tiana's just because of her skin colour (the most worst reason and very racist). Mulan may be isn't born as princess, but her act and personality is same with the pure princess, even she is more than it. She is a hero. I don't know what to said about Tiana's, What is wrong with a black princess? Can't you accept it? Instead we need a variation race from DP. DPs might not be filled by all Caucasian princess, if was it would be boring and not variation. Jasmine, I guess she's in the middle. Snow White isn't overrated it all, she's just one of famous DPs. I think the overrated DPs is Aurora.
