A Dingglehopper!
A Dingglehopper!
Hi everyone, it's been ages since I had written my last review! Anyway, today I am going to be writing the Little Mermaid review and what my younger brother name Prasert and I felt about this 2023 live action reboot!

The Storyline

While the majority of the story is the same, however there are a number of changes I felt that it filled the plot hole of the 1989 film to which we all grew up with. Like we get to see the backstory of Triton and Ursula relationship as siblings, which was the original idea for the 1989 animated film.
Prasert and I were surprised to see Eric's mother for the fist time and she's black too. My assumption is that Eric was actually adopted as a baby and that his adopted father sadly passed away prior to the events of the film, his relationship with his mother is very similar to Prince Kit's relationship with this father in Disney's 2015 live action film, Cinderella.
I was disappointed that the Crash the Wedding scene was rushed and not very comedic enough for the film, but on the other hand, I guess that it could be shorten in the interest of time constraint. The same applies for Chef Louis and his signature song, Les Poissons which was excluded from the film itself.
During the Destruction of the Grotto, it's portrayed very differently, in the animated film, Ariel finds Eric's statue that landed in her grotto and she's jumping with joy until it was short-lived when her father, King Triton arrived after Sebastian was being pressured to blurt the secret out and destroyed everything, but in this reboot, it was less scary and very short.
Finally, I love how they also included Hans Christian Anderson's quote at the prologue, this was done as a tribute to the author who penned both The Little Mermaid and The Snow Queen, the latter would become the basis of Disney's Frozen!

The Characters

Ariel is played by African-American actress and singer, Halle Bailey in her very first Disney film. I was really amazed by the character developments of Ariel in this live-action film. Especially when she came to confront Vanessa moments before the film's climax, unlike her animated counterpart.
At least she has more screen time and her character is very bold and has more courage as well. To which I salute the producers for giving Ariel more character developments!
Sebastian remains the same as his animated counterpart, despite the fact that he looks like Mr Krab from Spongebob Squarepants!
Flounder looks the same as well, except he's skinner than his animated counterpart.
King Triton is very stern in this reboot, but at least he's not hotheaded like his cartoon version. He creeps me out during the Destruction of the Grotto!
Unlike his animated counterpart, Scuttle is changed into a woman and can dives into the water. Her mannerisms is very much like a tomboy and she sounds a bit like Mulan when she joined the army! Despite this, she's hilarious and her singing is WAY better than her cartoon version!
Like Ariel, Prince Eric also went through character developments and his singing voice sounds like Michael Ball, the singer who originated Marius Pontmercy in Les Miserables! An observation that Prasert pointed it out during his song after his mother tells him to forget about Ariel, who was known as the mysterious girl at this point of the story.
Finally, Ursula is another character that when through some changes as well. Her tentacles also have minds of their own when looking for the potion when she's about to transform into Vanessa, unfortunately her death is scarier than the animated one and it scarred me to this very day. Melissa McCarthy played Ursula in this reboot and her singing blew me away, especially with her rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls! Initially, I thought Queen Latifah would play her considering that she played her in the 2019 The Little Mermaid live.

Music & Songs

We get to hear a number of familiar songs like Part Of Your World, Poor Unfortunate Souls, Kiss The Girl and Under The Sea. Alan Menken was asked to write new songs specially for this reboot with the help of lyricist Lin Manuel Miranda, who was also the composer of Disney's Moana.
Plus, Halle's voice sounds a bit like Ariana Grande when she sang part Of Your World, and she gave a very powerful rendition of Part Of Your World! She's breathless.
The new songs gave both Ariel and Eric character developments! Initially, I thought that the film was going to take songs from the short-lived musical. But I was wrong in the end!

Visualisation

The visualisations and the special effects played a very dominant role in this reboot, and it reminded me of Avatar: The Way Of Water due how similar the visualisation and the ambience of the film itself!

Part Of Your World

So, there you have it! My review on this 2023 live action reboot based on the 1989 animated film that we all grew up with. If you want me to do a comparison of both the 1989 and 2023 versions, please let me know in the comments section below.

Please Note: This is a mature subject matter. If you're uncomfortable feel free not to read.

This is my first time writing an article on Fanpop as well as on the topic of Disney but I have in fact written comprehensive articles about the place sexuality holds in American society so I at least can claim to know my facts fairly well. This is a break down on movie by movie basis exploring the sexual tones, or what I can pull since these are really films for kids, of not only the princess but also the prince as well as a few characters on the side. Let's go in chronological order!

Snow White and...

Okay I'm trying to make a complete list of all Disney Princesses. To make this list the Disney girl must be either born royalty or she marries royalty. (So while Mulan is awesome, she doesn't make the cut) This is to include all princesses not just leading ladies.
If you see one is not on the list please comment.

Born Royalty
-Adella (King Triton's Daughter)
-Alana (King Triton's Daughter)
-Andrina (King Triton's Daughter)
-Aquata (King Triton's Daughter)
-Ariel
-Arista (King Triton's Daughter)
-Atta (A Bug's Life)
-Attina (King Triton's Daughter)
-Aurora
-Dot (A Bug's Life)

This film tells the story of a sixteen year old mermaid Ariel who is dissatisfied greatly with her life under the sea. Paying no attention to the warnings of her father, King Triton, and the court musician, the crab Sebastian, Ariel and her best friend, Flounder the fish frequently reach the surface of the ocean, and with the help of the goofy seagull named Scuttle, they collect human artifacts.

Regardless of her awareness of the forbidden contact between humans and sea people, Ariel strives to become part of the human world. Hiding in her secret cave, Ursula, who has been looking for a chance...

PrincessAyeka12 gave me the fabulous idea of coming up with what books and authors each princess would like to read. We already know that Belle's a bookworm, but what would the other princesses spend hours flipping through, totally lost to the outside world? I had a lot of fun with this article, since I love reading. I've read at least one book from most of these authors, although not all of them. All credit for this idea goes to PrincessAyeka12! All images made by me.

Snow White

I get the distinct feeling that Snow would just adore classic children's books such as Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures...

Hello, I'm PrueFever, a 32 years old guy from Denmark and a Major Disney Fan! My all-time favorite Disney Movie is The Little Mermaid, Walt Disney's 28th full-lenght animated classic from 1989. I just love all the characters in the movie, the songs, the score and the animation. I grew up with Mermaid, it was the first Disney Movie I saw, so there's definitely nostalgic reasons as well, I'm not gonna deny that! I can always watch the movie and my mood goes up 100%! It never fails to amaze me. Also, the voice actors in this movie is spetacular! Jodi Benson is great as Ariel and even greater as...

So as some of you may have read, and if not then I highly recommend(!), my link. In that article, I mentioned a website called link which helped me a lot with understanding dominant characteristics relative to seasons. This site also provided a little Fashion Style Quiz! So, I couldn't help myself but to try and put myself in each of the DP's shoes and take the quiz for each DP to see what style they'd get. I humbly do believe the results came out fairly accurate but I'd love to hear what you guys think!

I listed each Disney Princess in accordance with their dominant fashion persona. They all...

12 Season Color Wheel
12 Season Color Wheel
So I never really got to experience much of fashion-culture growing up and have just recently begun to give it any focus or attention. I have heard of the rule that "Redheads shouldn't wear pink." and I have seen some people discuss this here on FanPop in terms of Ariel and her pink dress. I have also read many comments debating Aurora's famous "Blue vs. Pink Dress". In those discussions, I heard a talented user on this site, link say things like "She's a Winter." etc. I thought that was so fascinating! I had never heard of this concept before so I decided to look into it. That is how I came...

Please note that this is a countdown where we users make a lot of assumptions and don't provide proof of anything. This is for the amusement so please don't kill the fun :)

11. Prince
The Prince from Snow White comes in last place, can't say I'm stunned. At that time, Disney animators haven't mastered drawing male characters yet so I'm guessing what's underneath isn't HD quality either. He's also quite feminine looking, petite frame with soft edges. No worries though, Snow White loves his man for his huuuuuuuge heart :)

10. Charming
Nope, still not quite there with drawing men. Charming...
